Pretty much bs. Why isn't there some sort of contingency law against this? If he was actively seeking underage girls that would be totally different.

The funny part is that's what the one state senator they interviewed said to do. Sure, because that's a normal thing to ask someone.

I have to ask, though, what is the age of consent in the state he was in? He thought she was 17, but I don't know if that would be legal regardless.

In this instance, he received a letter from her while in jail where she said she was sorry about lying about her age. Even her mom is siding with him. The only obstruction is the pos judge.

the idea is that the act itself is sufficient for guilt because we've decided that at a certain age and below, the minor cannot consent. thus, even if they lied and the adult was ignorant of the true age, they were taking advantage of the minor
kinda like how you can shoot at a deer but get charged with involuntary manslaughter if you miss and hit a person

of course the idea is the judge can take this sort of thing into account, but the way laws are written shouldn't drastically change

So if you buy a car from someone and it turns out to be stolen should you get arrested even if you had no idea?

It's an acceptable argument if they're only a few years apart. If you're 30 years old, you really don't have any business being in this situation to begin with. If you're not sure about their age, stay away. 18 year olds don't have much of a choice because they're in the gray area with the jailbait.

Well in this situation you weren't the one who stole it (aka, commit the crime) in the first place... the person who actually stole the car gets the full blame.

The person in this story actually did commit a crime (having sex with a minor) so that's why he's in trouble. It's not rocket science.

Honestly I can't lie, I don't have any experience with cars. Isn't there a method where the seller can prove to the buyer where he got that car and where that car originated from? If the buyer isn't willing to extract that information from the seller then yes, the buyer should be arrested for buying a stolen car even if they had no idea.

So if the seller presents fake documents or some kind of workaround is it also the buyers fault? How much does a regular, average buyer have to dig?
