Certain issues had not yet become partisan at the time. Like during the 70s the most anti abortion politician would have been Ted Kennedy. That's why there's a bit of a policy mix up. If you look at historical politicians you also need to look at the historical context.

It's also why you'll see Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Warren used to be Republicans.

FDR was president when people owned slaves?

FDR was president before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which is when the southerners jumped from Democrat to Republican. Prior to that period, some hillbilly KKK member from Louisiana would have a been a Democrat.

It's thought that the infamous "party switch" happened during some point in the 60s - so if Abraham Lincoln is a modern Democrat what the hell is JFK? What is FDR? It doesn't make sense if you just add all the good guys to your party like a baby.

The side switching never happened.

The only thing that changed was tactics. When overt racism became unacceptable, Democrats switched to making minorities dependant on welfare and trying to keep them down by convincing them their only hope of getting a job is affirmative action and not on their own merits, or that all whites are out to get them, etc. In turn, these low-income jobs or welfare payments restricted them to poorer areas, where the Democrats don't have to see them or interact with them. Then they've concinced them police are out to kill them, so that they'll resist arrest and get even more charges (if not shot for resisting) and keep them in jail, where they often become legal slaves again.
