I have like 20+ games on my Switch and I love them all. Smash is fine but single player can get pretty boring TBH. I've unlocked characters and did a lot of the story mode but I prefer having it the same reason of having Mario Party...friends >_>

I love Smash, and it's up there for me, but Spider-Man looks like a completely different beast. Looks like it could easily be the best super hero game of all time, and probably will be my GOTY (that or KH3).

It's also kinda hard to be hyped about a game we know nothing about (referring to Smash).

Sig bet of some kind on it? Because unless the new Smash is the best selling game in the franchise, I kinda doubt it. Most of the big Sony first party games for PS4 have been on track to sell ~10 million in just over a year. Brawl which was on the Wii sold ~12 over its entire life cycle which seems like a simple task for Spider-Man (see my infograph I posted above).

I dunno if superhero games are safe bets for 10+ million. I don't think any of the Arkham games sold that much.

No PS4 exclusive has reached 10 million either IIRC.

Could go either way. I'd lean more towards Smash. Even Smash Bros on Wii U sold over 5 million which was nearly half of the userbase.

Uncharted 4 almost certainly passed 10 million by now. It was over 8.7 before the end of the year it released iirc. And Horizon was at 7.6 in about a year, and God of War is outpacing both of them. I'd be surprised if at that drastic pace they don't rather easily pass the 10 million mark. And not this gen, but the relatively recent TLOU sold 8 million in about a year as well.

Suffice to say Sony has had a lot of exclusive hits recently, and those are all without the major pull Spider-Man has on the merchandise market. Couple that with the push from what is quickly becoming the highest grossing movie of all time, there's definitely a lot more in its favor than Batman ever had.

It's not a guarantee, but chances of it doing as well as those other games or better are extremely high.

Dark Knight isn't even close to what Infinity War is. Arkham also wasn't marketed alongside Dark Knight like Spider-Man is. Also notice how that link I posted above showed Spider-Man merch outselling Batman AND Superman AND the Avengers combined and then doubled :p Hardly an analogous comparison.

But you're right about Sony and updating their figures. If there is no update then obviously it just gets called off. Might just be better to bet which will rank higher on NPDs since that actually has a set value (assuming Smash is Sept).

Super Mario Odyssey will likely outsell Super Mario Galaxy this year. They're also expecting to sell an extra 20 million Switch consoles this financial year. I think this Smash Bros will be the best selling game in the series so far. I don't think it's unrealistic that it will sell 15+ million by the time it's all said and done.

Meanwhile I'm not totally sure if Spider-Man would hit that. It would have to be both the best selling PS4 and superhero game to do that I believe.

The bet probably won't really go anywhere though because we'll never see lifetime sales for Spidey like we will for Smash.

That's not what I said. I said "marketed with" which is what Spider-Man is doing. The latest trailer for Spider-Man PS4 literally has "The Iron Spider from the recent hit movie Infinity War!" and there are multiple hints towards other marketing crossovers like this. And again, you're ignoring that even DK sold a mere fraction of what IW is going to sell.

Not a good point with Star Wars, as even with that series being botched by EA, the first one is one of the best selling games of this entire gen.

And who knows on Smash. I can still see Spider-Man outselling it early on. Smash will likely have stronger legs like Brawl did, but only time will tell.

Arkham Knight was also a year into the gen, BvS wasn't nearly as successful (lol), and it wasn't really marketed together much. The Spider-Man game showed before my movie and I heard the same from a few others, but obviously not every theater is the same. And I very much disagree on marketing. If they market them together by the time IW is on dvd I definitely expect plenty of kids and entry level people to see Spider-Man and make the connection (either to the movies or the character in general).

No I'm not underselling Batman at all. Look at my infograph above and compare the sales of IW just a few weeks in to even the best selling Batman movie. It's even really close.

It sold at least 14 million (probably a LOT more by now since that 14 mill was just after half a year) and a vast majority of those were on PS4. So not really a good point if you intentionally brought it up.

If Horizon can sell ~8 million in a year, I find it hard to believe Spider-Man will apparently struggle to maintain that range unless something horrible goes wrong, which seems unlikely given Sony's current track record.
