I hear Laurel on my speakers and Yanny on my phone.

My phone speaker is really heavy on the mids and highs, speakers are extremely bass-heavy. I'm guessing there are two voices and "Laurel" is mixed lower.

They also have a few aural similarities that are fairly complimentary making it easy to mix together. I'd imagine this is possible using any two sounds that are similar enough in terms of their wavelength and then emphasize one or the other. You'd be hard pressed to have everyone hearing it for the first time have it played on the same speaker in the same conditions so the confusion arises.

It's a recording of laurel from Vocabulary.com, played through a guy's speakers and recorded by his phone or something, so it is saying laurel, but the sound quality is super poor.

Tried on a phone, laptop, and iPad. Both my mom and me only hear Yanny. I know that's the wrong one, but I can't hear Laurel at all unless it's been altered to make it easier.

i dont really hear either one. the only reason i feel people hear one or the other is because of what that one video said. "priming" if it didn't say "yanny" i woulda heard something more like "jerry" with the j pronounced a bit weird.

The correct answer is Laurel. That's what the voice in the recording is saying. People can hear the other word if you mess around with sound settings. But the person speaking in the recording is only saying one word. The people listening to it can hear more than that word though.

That's just part of the trick. Or even it was perfectly pronounced, you would still hear the other word. Well, I don't know if this was supposed to be a trick. Someone probably found out that if you increased or decreased the frequency of the recording, you will hear a different word. Either way, the only word being said in the recording is Laurel. If you use bad quality headphones, you will probably hear Laurel.

You can hear laurel regardless of the quality. I can hear it with my $10 earbuds and with my $700 headphones.

It has nothing to do with his pronunciation. Laurel is very clearly pronounced. It's just the audio distortion that causes the confusion.
