Greedy ISPs wont upgrade to fiber optics because they know they can just charge you to use their crappy DSL.

At work, we signed up for an internet that seemed too good to be true until we saw it was only 1Mbps internet. Now we have 200 Mbps.

Meh, what happened to Google Fiber? Stopped expansions due to executives and shareholders realizing how much of a money sinkhole the project was.

I feel like US ISPs made a major mistake in trying to piggy back off of telephone and coax lines to provide people internet for too long.

South Korean ISPs have been rolling out fiber for a couple decades and they've had internet speeds in the hundreds of megabops for residential users for a looong time now.

Maybe if you have a shit company like Comcast, in which case it's your own fault.

Google Fiber ran into a multitude of problems. They're still expanding in cities where they've already rolled out service, but muuuch more slowly than they had originally planned.

I talked to a Google Fiber rep last week at my apartment complex. Another problem they ran into, in Austin at least, was people not actually signing up for service in areas where they built out to. They've paused construction and are currently working on strategies to get more people to sign up in those areas.

I think part of the problem is they built out to areas where a lot of older people live and it's hard to get them to change anything even if they don't like what they already have. Hell, there was an older guy at my apartment complex also talking to the Google Fiber rep. He doesn't like Spectrum, but he didn't want to change to Google Fiber because he was worried he'd miss out on the NBA playoffs because Google Fiber doesn't have NBA TV. The NBA playoffs aren't even going to be on NBA TV, but he was still hesitant to make the switch.

The money sinkhole was all legal caused by being sued by other ISPs. Nothing to do with the fiber infrastructure itself.

True, but they've also been investing in their infrastructure a lot more than us. Fiber optic technology has the ability to reach the most rural of communities in the US. If we as a country had put a comparable effort and investment into rolling out fiber over the past 20 years or so as South Korea has, we'd have much better internet all over the place.

Most developed countries have better internet infrastructures than America, you didn't do the investment years ago when everyone else did.
