My mother swears by mediums and even saw one who supposedly "read her" and got my grandfather. Of course, he asked my father and got him wrong, but my mother stood and said that her dad fit the description.

Fake, its called a cold reading.

They throw out fairly common general topics (Like having lost a loved one) and see if the mark reaponds to them. If they respond the physic will fish for details and quickly skip any failed guesses making it harder to remember then what they got right.
