Apparently the genre has actually been labeled as Metroidvania.

What are others in this kind of genre? Games that take place in a single location and over time you explore the map, clear rooms as you go which give you new abilities that allow you to access previously unreachable rooms?

Other games that come to mind are Luigis Mansion, Arkham Asylum, Metal Gear Solid 1, the first few Resident Evil games.

Others?

Play Hollow Knight, it's hands down the best game of the genre.

I've tried dozens of over-hyped Metroidvanias that I gave up on after the first few hours because they were boring as shit. The GBA and DS Metroids and Castlevanias are still the best of the genre. Everything else is disappointing in one way or another. So just play those if you haven't yet, they're all great.

And I don't know if I'd say Cave Story belongs in the genre. I guess it's pretty close but the levels are all very linear. Good game though.

When they're done right, which is rare, they're great fun. When they're done wrong they're overly easy, unbalanced messes of games that feel incredibly lazy. There never seems to be an in between
