Boston Dynamics says that an operator initially had to steer the robot through the course it took so that it could map the area. But for this video, its using that knowledge to operate autonomously, using cameras to avoid obstacles.


I have a slight issue with this. Was it the same area? With the same obstacles and layout? Then I'm not impressed.

If they used previous information on a different area to have the robot figure out how to get out of similar obstacles, then it's a step forward.

Wait, they're not past being have to manually map the course into it? So have they just been kicking robots around the last however many years up until now? That's a long way off from being legitimately impressive AI robotics.

Dude we're still like 30-40 years away from functional consumer availability for useful robots. People who think the singularity will occur in our lifetime are seriously underestimating the insane capacity that humans really have.
