Still the helmet concept was pretty unique and it had some original stage and enemy designs. I remember I got sort of scared of the opening sequence (but then again I was a little kid), specifically the rectangular grid pattern of that "arcade room" from the story. Doesn't a face appear inside it when you go into the Options menu? --- When you have mastered numbers, you will in fact no longer be reading numbers, any more than you read words when reading books.
