People are taking daily showers and even using loofahs and other products harsh on the skin often.

Studies show that showering too often can dry out your skin, and leave you susceptible to germs and infections.

In addition, showering too much strips the skin of of protective natural oils which can disrupt good bacteria that supports peoples immune systems.

Another general point is the weird inconsistent standards people have for what they perceive to be hygiene.

They'll wash their hands 14 times after taking a pee and touching some stainless steel taps, but then they'll get into their car, put their paws all over a rubber steering wheel that's never been cleaned, drive down to a local coffee shop, exchange coins with a barista for a bagel and eat it while typing on their keyboard which has also never been cleaned.

But...gotta make sure you wash your hands like, at least 25 times after peeing.

This recent flu season was really bad. I read about healthy young people dying from the flu.

I wonder if part of the issue is because of our skin.

I say it has to do more with people not getting vaccinated... then they spread their illness to other people with compromised immune systems...

I work in a hospital and you would be surprised at the amount of people who fail to wash their hands after using the restroom. Yes, even hospital staff.

If anything, people aren't hygienic enough.

Doesn't take me much effort to shower AND brush my teeth twice a day. I absolutely can not fathom how a person can go to their beds without cleansing themselves.

Yes, and the skin is an important part of our immune system.

Yes, and the skin is an important part of our immune system.

Unless you have open wounds on your skin, most viruses or bacteria cannot penetrate the skin.

In some ways, yes. pinky brought up some good points with that. But that just makes me say people need to be more hygienic/conscious of it in the right ways

Not true. Bacteria does not become resistant to hand sanitizer.

I think the average person could probably get by with showering every other day. But the research is too extreme. It says shit like oh people only need to shower once a week. Fuck that shit if anyone did that they would smell awful.

But essentially destroying the good, protective bacteria and oils in your skin does not leave you susceptible to viruses and germs? How?

The human body has benign bacteria/viruses inside and outside the human body.
The main defense mechanism for human beings are "white blood cells", and those white blood cells are highly effective against "the common flu" and other kinds of "airborne" pathogens.

Yeah I shower twice a day most days. Before work, after the gym. I don't really feel dry. I don't get ashy. I'm brown so it would show up on me. Wife always comments on how good my skin is.

Maybe I'm extra oily? lol. Sometimes on the weekend I'll take a shower later than normal and I'll feel greasy af.

They aren't healthy young people though. They're young people with no immune system. When it comes to hygiene, I've always put a minimal basic common sense effort in. There are maybe a few (like 5-10 tops) instances a year where I wash my hands in any other context than when in the shower or after going to the bathroom. I don't ever use hand sanitizer. I almost never even think about germs or bacteria unless the subject is brought up. I've never had a flu shot. In the past 10 years, the only time I've ever had the flu was during the swine flu epidemic. At the time, a roommate worked at a dining hall of a local college. There was a swine flu outbreak at that college. He got it a few days after that was announced and I got it a few days later. Neither of us even went to a doctor, but my symptoms were milder and I got over it faster. A number of people died from it. I missed 1 day of work to recover (plus 2 days off that were already days off). The only medication of any kind I took was some sore throat spray, which I only bothered with because my other roommate's girlfriend had it and offered it to me. Otherwise, flu season means nothing to me other than "probably gonna have more instances of minor to moderate sinus congestion than during the rest of the year"

tl;dr - yes they fucking are

Dude. No. And get a physical job and go to the gym / train and if you don't shower twice a day you're a stinky jerk tbh.
