Stereotypes are a product of cognitive schemas. Basically it's a mental shortcut of putting thing into groupings by how you perceive or interact with them. Problems arise when faced with a stereotype that doesn't seem valid, instead of re-evaluating the stereotype, people attempt to apply a different stereotype.

For example:
A male that doesn't fit with masculine stereotypes is a non-typical male. Being non-typical does not make them female. Though certain communities suggest that fitting into the opposite stereotype changes what a person is.
