Wow this topic sucks ass.

Let's just pack this up. I'm planning to read Patricia Limerick's Legacy of Conquest for Red Dead Redemption 2. I'm a history undergrad, so this sort of stuff fascinates me. Although Rockstar games haven never been about historical accuracy, I do appreciate their penchant for social commentary of American society, life and tradition. With the "Wild" or "Old West" being so strangely ingrained into American identity, it'll be interesting to experience a video game on a much nuanced level. Will Rockstar explore deep into historical facts? Or will it be pulp fiction of the Sergio Leone type? Rockstar's RDR seems to glorify and romanticize the Old West, and in fact seems to take much from Frederick Turner Bull's "Frontier Thesis."

The original RDR never really dug deep into historical accuracy, but careful examination of dialogue seem to say a striking deal about democracy and liberty--two important American ideals. I really hope to see more First Nations groups in the game. To me, the Wild West is very much about these groups as much as it is about White Americans, and Westward expansion.

It's not exclusive to Western games, either. I took a whole class on how Hollywood has rehashed the thesis over and over. There are countless examples of non-Westerns that have embraced it, such as Avatar, Full Metal Jacket, or Deliverance.

I assume you are Canadian, then, because First Nations only applies to aboriginal people north of the border, and it doesn't include all aboriginal groups.

I am. Sorry. "Political correctness" and all. Yeah, First Nations generally refers to Native/ aboriginal/ indigenous Canadians. I don't use the word "Indian" because it's the most hilarious stupid term that people keep using (even worse with the South Asian minority in BC). "Native Americans" also has its own set of problems.

It wasn't about political correctness, it's about accuracy.

Anyway, yeah, Indian is pretty much derogatory in any case that isn't in the Treaties or used by the people themselves. Native Americans is generally the accepted term in the US, but is sort of on the line in Canada (in Sask, Alberta, and BC it's sort of accepted but carries a bit of weird undertone). You are always safe using Aboriginal/Indigenous, though, if you aren't sure.

But yeah, the Frontier Thesis is part of the American creation myth and is definitely deeply ingrained in the culture. Don't know how much RDR2 is going to follow it, though.

Well I sort of thought accuracy is the reason someone came up with "First Nations" in the first place but figured the term stuck even in colloquial terms because people thought it's about "political correctness."

Nationalism and national identity topics fascinate me.

I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain that First Nations was used as a term originally to refer to the tribes included in the treaty process, so it wouldn't be applicable to Indigenous people of the US (whose government took a more ... stabby ... approach to colonization).
