My dad drives about 80 minutes one way to get to work. It's mostly highway so no traffic though.

Wouldn't do it if I had a choice.

just spoke with the recruiter for the position, she set up a phone interview with the hiring manager tomorrow.

seems that the pay is in-line with a 30% increase in salary so now i am going to check traffic maps at like 5pm to see how bad the drive back is. I think I have it in me if the drive is just an hour, but if it's like an hour and a half i'll be nervous

30% increase in salary isn't worth the drive if you're content at your current job.

I've never met anybody that enjoyed a long commute.

in a literal sense it's more or less 1:1 pay for the extra commute if youre doin 40/wk

so its a question of what your free time is worth to you

put another way:

do you pay people to cut your jrass or do you do it yourself

if you do it yourself would you rather spend that time in a car driving to work

this analogy does not work if you are a cheap piece of shit

not unless it paid a salary I just couldn't say no to. And even then I'd probably just move closer to the job, that's a lot of unnecessarily wasted time every single day.

Can confirm.

My commute is one hour and thirty one way. Would be roughly 45 minutes without traffic.

Mine's 45 minutes as well, but I also work from home 2 days a week and I have a reverse commute which makes it a lot better.

i figure what i will do is go to the interview and if i feel like this job is perfect for me then i'll suck it up and make the commute for a little bit until i can leverage this for an even better job.

commuting for 1hr+ a day will kind of eat into my time to do grad school later this year/next year tho

I do this currently. I used to drive there, gave up, then started taking the bus. It's a popular route so I have to get to the stop early or I miss it/have to stand. Even in shared lanes it's 45+ minutes on average. It's the pits, and while I'd love to get out of here, jobs suck right now here.

Because you can read a book or watch a movie/tv show while on a bus. You can nap too.

Public transportation is usually a better deal than driving yourself. You can at least entertain yourself if need be.

You've clearly never ridden a motorcycle down a nice highway.

I'd literally get to practice a hobby I do in my OFFTIME, while going to work, and getting paid for it. Like, is there a BETTER way to explain this?

I would do up to 1.5 hours total IF I could take public transit for the bulk/entire trip. I honestly don't mind if I could just sit on a train and browse the net/watch a movie/play a game for an hour before/after work.

i have spotify & podcasts and stuff on my phone but i think at a certain point i'll probably be grumpy and just want to get home.

i just plugged in the office and my home address and it looks like it'd take 1 hour and 4 minutes to get home if i left that place right now

They don't? Not from the US, but it's a common practice where I live.

Not here. They don't pay for time either, which is the part I actually care more about. In America, you have to be at your job from 9AM to 5PM. They pay you for that time. Which means you use your off-the-clock time to drive to and from the office. I.e. I leave my apartment at 845, so those 15 minutes are off the clock.

I couldn't care less about the meager gas reimbursement, my gripe comes from the time that is technically mine being spent stuck in traffic.

Fuck no.

30 minute commute is already way too much for me. That plus an hour to get ready in the morning eats up 2 hours of my day.

What ever happened to 8-8-8? I thought I was supposed to get 8 hours of free time, but it seems like at least 2 hours of that "free" time is necessary for the 8 hours of work.
