I read that the reason drunk drivers tend to survive these things is because they're not completely aware of the situation and won't tense up when a crash is set to happen.

Sober people will tense up, and that actually makes injuries--even fatal ones--easier to happen.

To be fair, I'm sure his video of the crash was/will be very valuable to law enforcement.

But technically he could have stopped filming after the crash. I think he stopped filming at an appropriate time. It doesn't show the victim.
