Working active Army, I was deployed to Fort Dix in NJ for a year, I worked in the motor pool, and I worked range control helping qualify soldiers. It was right after 9/11 in November, and the first 3 months I got 2 days off. Work days ranged from 12 to 18 hours, including PT every morning before breakfast at a 4:30am wake up. We got an average of 4 hours sleep per night.

I adapted after the first few weeks, but it was a life of wake up, exercise, work all day, eat, and sleep as much as you can while you can. It ruined the long term relationship I was in because I barely had time weekly to even call her.

My buddy did one of those "college entrepreneur" house painting businesses where they trained him to run the business but pretty much let him loose within a few months to run it himself.

He's the best salesman I've ever met but he is shit at scouting workers. He gave jobs to all his friends and they were lazy and kept quitting. I stuck with him over the whole summer as his #2 guy and there were some rough periods, the worst of which was something like 21 days straight 10 hours/day. Hauling around ladders, scraping old paint off houses, power washing them, and painting them all over again.

We have a lot of hilarious memories from that summer and we're super close because of it but man it was brutal at the time.

Bristol Bay commercial fishing.

Ive done it every year for the last 5, and I only fish for about a month. But man it is hard, physically demanding work where your typically only getting 1-3 hours of sleep a day.

Picking salmon out of the net all day, running the toe line, roundhauling the net in.. all the while you havent showered for 2 weeks, your soggy everyday, and your hands are starting to become one big swollen sore.. Fun stuff =D
