Guacamelee is a bit too linear but good. Salt and Sanctuary is Souls-like in 2D. Go with this one if you want a fully contextualized world, a haunting atmosphere and an emphasis on combat. If you want something that breaks the mold a little more, then Steamworld Dig + Steamworld Dig 2 are really fun, compact games. Give these a try if the words "platform mining" intrigue you. Ori and the Blind Forest is another one that often comes up in these topics. Ori's presentation is stronger than its gameplay, but it's still a wonderful game. If you prefer an emphasis on platforming then check it out. --- BKSheikah owned me so thoroughly in the 2017 guru contest, I'd swear he used the Lens of Truth to pick his bracket.
