Something that's derivative of much better franchises shows its age, just naturally. Making a Mario clone, adding gliding to it, and then taking out all of the fun of level design makes for a poor game in 2018. I look back on it more as a curiosity in the age of mascot platformers, not the merits of its gameplay. I will say though, getting Stewart Copeland to do the soundtrack was really awesome. Something that's derivative of much better franchises shows its age, just naturally. Making a Mario clone, adding gliding to it, and then taking out all of the fun of level design makes for a poor game in 2018. I look back on it more as a curiosity in the age of mascot platformers, not the merits of its gameplay. I will say though, getting Stewart Copeland to do the soundtrack was really awesome. No denying that. Mario clone? Mario 64 was barely out before both Crash and Spyro came out. Actually, Crash was something Mario should have been after SMW, instead of Mario 64. Not to mention neither game has bad level design, aside from Crash 3 which had half the game be stupid vehicle mini-games. And uh, does this make Mario 64 automatically good or something? Since it was original? Something that aged well? Please dont say yes, because the camera is one of the worst things in any video game ever. "Barely"? There was at least a good year between Mario 64 and Spyro. Not to mention you're divorcing it from the context that these games were being made in about a year.
