There's something similar to this in Canada as well, like when someone dies as a result of you committing a crime.

In any event I fucking hate burglars. There's few things lower than breaking into people's homes. What do you do if you find grandma knitting on her sofa during the burglary? Fuck them.

I wonder how far you can take this.

Imagine if you're riding in a car with your friend driving.

Unbeknownst to you, your friend has a suspended license. So when he sees a police car, he starts running away from it.

The cops give chase and shoot your friend.

Can you be charged with murder?

Honestly, when you agree to commit a burglary, you agree to commit a crime where someone dying is a foreseeable consequence.

What do you do if you find someone in the home? It's not unlikely that one of your accomplices will try to kill that person to avoid being recognized.

Burglaries aren't exactly minor crimes, even if those guys are teenagers.

For example, if a victim has a heart attack and dies while being robbed, the perpetrator can be charged with murder even if he had no intent to kill. If the robber's friend was sitting in a getaway car a block away, under accomplice liability, he too can be charged with murder. One of the most famous examples involved a man convicted of murder for loaning his car to friends who went on to murder an 18-year-old girl. According to prosecutors, it didn't matter that he was 30 minutes away.

Since they deigned not to give any info about the case other than the sentencing I'm gonna guess there was some provable intent previous to the car being lent. The way they gloss over the reason he's being charged (the shootout, breaking and entering, burglary, assault with a deadly weapon) lends them little credence to their factual acumen.

This kind of law exists in many states. I remember the last time I heard about it cops shot a guy outside a club and a bystander got tagged and they dropped that right on his charges.
