This is the decade when Dadrock peaked, but also some of the earliest punk albums came out in the 70s. There was also disco and other genres I'm less familiar with

A top 5, off the top of my head
The Who - Quadrophenia
Van Halen
The Cars
The Clash - Give Em Enough Rope

Probably a toss up between

The Clash - London Calling
David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars

Yes they're probably the two most "cliche" picks from both artists, but god damnit, they're both perfect albums. From two artists with strong catalogs from the decade (and beyond)

Deep Purple - Machine Head

It's sad that smoke on the water is their most well known song because it was the weakest song on the album. Not saying it was a bad song though.

there's actually a smaller percentage of jazz than what I thought there would be. I guess most of the jazz I listen to is either 50s-60s or 80s-contemporary

There is no shame in that.
They are both amazing works, and frankly not too many people have actually listened to them.
((I mean a lot have, but if you just ask around to people in general, very few know them.))

I have to add, pretty much all of Pink Floyd's albums.

I could also cheat a little and throw, The Beatles Let It Be, in there.

Also, The Sex Pistols, Never Mind The Bollocks

As well as so many others.
