Quick note, that guy playing has not unlocked any additional moves and is intentionally gimping himself to the basics as a "challenge run" so it's not the most accurate looking thing.

For example, GOW 2 spoilers: hercules whining like an emo brat that mommy or daddy never loved him as much as kratos, followed by a brutal face beating that left his skull turned into a fine bloody pulp . Now instead we got some weird tree with horns dropping from out of nowhere and then just dying in the least dramatic death ever

this is only the first game in a new trilogy. apparently *major spoilers regarding lack of god slaying* only one major named god is killed in this game and he's the final boss. The ending of this game is definitely setting up for the god slaying carnage that we know and love though. Can't wait.

Unless all we've seen is bullshit and this is secretly a modern third-person shooter, it can only be so much like a Naughty Dog game. People need to chill with the "Every Sony game is the same" because they have close cameras and lots of trees.

As far as I know it's more like modern Tomb Raider's structure with that semi-open world.

But yes it's a cinematic western game. God of War always was one really so it makes sense that it would follow modern trends. It's not like the old combat system is a great loss.

I do hope the game doesn't feel overly scripted though.

It seems to have lost much of it's edginess. Kratos killed the Gods of Olympus in horrific gory fashion. Now he seems like he's just a big p**** cat.

Amazing how many people expected Kratos to be the exact same after how GoW 3 ended. The monster that he was is gone. He was finally able to forgive himself.

I think as the plot goes on more elements of old Kratos will return. That's generally how these "retired guy with a dark past forced to return to his old life of violence" stories go.
