It's sad that Winnie the Pooh was the last one.

I'd like to see them do both types of animation. And keep exploring 3D animation styles. Pixar and Disney haven't really pushed 3D animation to interesting places recently, it all has a very similar art style. Instead of making more Moana-style animation, they should try something else, like they did for the Paperman short.

3D animation is fine for movies like Zootopia, but humans usually still look kind of plasticy and weird in 3D animation for whatever reason

That's true, they have done some great things with certain effects when it comes to replicating realistic water, subsurface scattering in skin, hair, and more. But I'm thinking more about the general art style. Recently we've seen movies like

Peanuts movie

Lego movie

I saw some really cool animation styles made by a sort of avant garde animator a few years ago and I wish I could find them again, they were really cool. When you compare these movies with what Disney and Pixar put out, you can tell that Disney movies all really look pretty similar to each other by comparison. And while I'm not totally in love with all of these movies' visuals, I do really like the variety they offer in the animation landscape. And I wish Disney would explore different styles a bit more since they are the biggest animation company in the world.

Here's a short Disney made with a program called Meander:

With their resources, they could make a truly beautiful and visually refreshing/innovative movie whose technical and artistic merits go beyond just making more realistic water and hair.

The animation in Moana was fucking fantastic. Compare it to Tangled which came out in 2010 and there's a massive leap in quality.

I'd say no, the type of animation used doesn't make a movie good.

Haven't seen Moana yet, but I think the type of animation does make a difference in how you perceive the film, though it won't make a terrible story good.

I find it odd that 3D animation is seen as okay for everyone, but 2D animation is regarded as childish. I feel the opposite way about it. 2D animation is a work of art. With 3D animation, I feel like I'm looking at a video game.

It would be nice if they made another traditionally animated movie, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.
