Generally no.

I work as a nurse in the US and most of my female patients typically don't mind when I refer to them as "honey" at all. Some of them even find it endearing.

But call one of them "ma'am" and they will shoot you down immediately, no matter how much they like you. Because according to them: "ma'am" is what their mothers and grandmothers were referred to as. And not as many modern American women find it flattering to be addressed the same way...

For real. It just is what it is. Many of them do not like it. Not just from me, but also my coworkers. "Ma'am" is not popular here.

Maam implies theyre old now? I say it at work all the time, even to HS/college-aged girls.

To me, its just courtesy and being polite, not this youre old bull crap.
