If I have two switches and one copy of Mario kart. Does it do download and play like DS did? Or is the one Switch obsolete and I can only use the joy cons from it ?

It's more focused on local play on one Switch. Download play doesn't exist because the file sizes would be too large.

You get four switches each with a copy of Mario kart and then all four play the game individually with splitscreen.

Well, bear in mind the optimal set up for that situation would be couch play, which is an option.

Only reason I could see for doing this is if you wanted to play somewhere that didnt have a TV, which I did do once with some buddies.
