The first two seasons were a comedy about Orel, a little boy who tries to be a good Christian in a town of sanctimonious, hypocritical zealots. The show is somewhat formulaic: Orel learns a lesson in church, deeply misunderstands it, does something sort of fucked up, his dad catches him, beats him with a belt, and then teaches him a lesson that misses the real point, often with a "lost commandment" backing it up. The first episode sort of sums it up: Orel comes to think that the dead are sinning because they're rejecting God's gift of life. Using the Necronomicon, he raises the dead and - believing their rotting clothes are what's making them stink - he strips them. The undead run around town, feasting on human flesh and Orel's dad figures out he's responsible. After a beating, his dad explains that the town is afraid of the zombies because they're naked, disobeying the 11th Commandment, "Thou shalt be ashamed of thy natural anatomy." Then the season 2 finale happened. Oooooh boy, did it happen. Orel and Clay (his dad) go on a hunting trip. Clay begins drinking heavily pretty much the moment they start camping and mocks Orel for being nervous about killing animals. He's disgusted when Orel refuses to shoot a deer, Clay drunkenly takes a shot and hits their hunting dog. He cooks and eats the dog while Orel grows increasingly worried about how drunk his dad is. Orel finally suggests that he might be too drunk to hunt, sending Clay into a rant about how women and ending with his depressing his life is. Orel gets scared and accidentally fires his pistol, breaking the last two bottles of booze. For the first time in the entire series, Orel confronts his dad about his drinking and says that he becomes a bad person when he drinks. This pisses Clay off and he says he's going to make Orel a man. He accidentally shoots Orel in the leg and pretty much turns the situation around to try and make it Orel's fault while Orel begs for help. He fashions a crappy tourniquet and drinks the rubbing alcohol. Orel finally states, "I hate you." Clay responds, "Hate away!" before passing out. A bear comes across them in the middle of the night. Orel is forced to shoot it to save his father's life. Clay wakes up in the morning, asks for Orel's sleeping bag to cover his eyes, then sleeps for another twelve hours. After he wakes up, he asks if Orel if he killed the bear. "Make me proud, son, and tell me you killed that bear." Orel says that Clay killed it. At home, Orel asks his mom why she married Clay. "Why not?" is her response. After Orel says that Clay becomes a different person when he drinks, she says that he doesn't change: his true natures just comes out. The episode ends with Orel in bed by himself. Then season three gets even fucking darker than that.
