A real life example I've seen SJW types like to use, which they tie up with accusations of misogyny in gaming communities, is when a female gamer tries to take part in gaming, she'll be called a fake gamer girl and shunned unless she can match the "real hardcore gamers" knowledge and skill. If I recall, specifically regarding Ready Player One, one article that accused it of gatekeeping was criticizing it for being so heavy on references that viewers/readers who aren't as dedicated to the trivia related to those references are excluded. Also something about one of the plot points from the book being the creator of the Oasis being obsessed with '80s pop culture and only gamers who had acquired a mastery of '80s pop culture trivia being able to excel. I don't know for sure myself, because I haven't read the book or seen the movie. None of us thought it was anything amazing, but it was a fun ride. And references are far beyond just gaming. There's 80s and 90s references from music, movie, show, and even people.
