I don't work a normal job. I'm in the Army. It is expected that I stand ready to be back at work at any time.

But if I worked at Bullshit Corporation LLC, I can't imagine my employment hinging on them being able to contact me 24/7.

How do people accept that as normal practice?

That's the way work works >_> unless its unionized that is.

That's when Bullshit LLC relocates its factory to Mexico, or outsources from Bangladesh.

when that happens to my wife she makes a wireless hotspot with her phone and connects her computer to that

her work peers are apparently amazed by this

Hotspots cost extra and many people don't have them.

I have two, actually but they're obviously much slower than my coaxial.

I get that jobs exist that need people on call but if you're a McDonald's worker, you shouldn't be expected to be on call for any and every shift

I shadowed a group of I&C Techs at a power plant once. One reason I didn't like the sound of the job was that you're on call 24/7, with like... even greater than 911 urgency. Like, the world is ending kind of urgency. Which makes sense I guess. A lot of these plants are redundant but once you lose that redundancy by one (or two or whatever) going offline, it's like having 1HP, you know?

The other reason was it was in the middle of freaking nowhere, and the OTHER other reason was it wasn't really design work. Somebody didn't clearly understand what I was looking for when they made that suggestion.

Oh and the OTHER other other reason was that it was cold and you have to spend like 30 minutes outside to take readings.

Are people, though?

Not McDonalds in particular, but there are <$10 an hour jobs that expect this of people.

Its expected and understandable in the IT field. Of course if you set up your infrastructure properly, there's so much redundancy that would need to fail before something becomes an "Oh shit" situation.

While all of my jobs have been 24/7 on call, it isn't something hanging over my head because of the safety nets I built into my systems.

Not entirely true. One of my jobs hit me and coworkers with mandatory overtime on both of our days off almost every week for like a good 8 months straight. When it was brought up to the union we were told "Needs of the company." That union was garbage though so maybe if you have a good one?

That sounds cool af. How'd you get a gig like that? Ever have any close calls?

Got a degree in television production and broadcasting. After that I was pretty cool with the department head and a contract with the local CBS affiliate came up and the company that got the contract reached out to the department head for anyone who may want the job. I said fuck yeah.

Plenty of close calls. Bird strikes, mechanical issues, other aircraft not paying attention or communicating, etc. Crossing dark mountains at night just to put a wrecked 18 wheeler on the 11 o clock news in another state. Shit like that. I guess what I hated most was practicing autorotations. Thats where you go up as high as possible and cut power to the engine and drop like a stone to about 1000 feet off the ground and pull power back in. Theres always a chance it dont come back.
