It really has more to do with the dog owner than the dog itself. A trained, or even just generally well-taken-care-of dog is an absolute joy to be around. On the flipside, a dog that's not well-groomed and/or is a hostile POS is just downright awful.

Agree. It's nice to have a dog that is good to humans and other dogs. Some of my friends have dogs that do not get along well with other dogs. Mine loves everyone and everything. A bundle of joy.

Just look at this face. Look at it.

They just want to get food and be taken out back to have a shit. That's it. That's the extent of a dog's complexity and why it "loves" you.

They are pack animals. Interacting with the pack is something dogs want to do. And that manifests as excitement when a member of their pack comes home.

Cats also want food and to take a shit, but they aren't nearly as animated as dogs when it comes to welcoming their owners home. And the reason for that is that domestic cats come from wildcats. And wildcats are mostly solitary animals.

This. A social animal acting like...a social animal? The horror lol

So what's the argument here then. That they "love" you because they're genetically operating on some sort of pack instinct? That's even worse than the food and taking it out to shit thing.

Pretty much. My dog loves me more than my brother, loves my sister more than me. It was her dog for 7 years then she moved out of the country and last 4 years I've been his owner. He has different levels of excitement for different people.

My point is, that I was making originally, is that it's easy "love". It's not even love actually. It's giving it food, taking it out to shit, and some genetic instinct the dog has to be around others just because.

So what's your argument? Humans are social animals, as are all primates (which we are). It's a genetic wiring with us to want to have some kind of companionship, our species wouldn't have been as successful as it has been and likely would not have survived had we been solitary.

So griping about dogs being social is kinda dumb.

And how is that different from human love? You date someone, feed them, spoil them with gifts and attention, for them to love you.

Sounds exactly like what you're saying about a dog.

I get that. I'm saying that real relationships between humans take work and are complex. Getting a dumb animal like a dog to "love" you is easy work and basically takes nothing but giving it food.

You haven't spent time around a pack dogs or observed wolves then. Their social structure is very complex, more than ours actually on some levels.

Not wild about dogs. Their in your face, needy personalities are what bother me most (coupled with dog breath).

But what's worse than dogs are dog owners. They, like their animals, have no sense of boundaries and social grace.

And they are very insecure. Anyone who needs wanton affection from a half mindless beast to feel good about their lives has some problems.

He's right. I regularly run across the following dog owners:

- Letting their dogs bark excessively for hours on end loudly
- Letting dogs shit everywhere and not picking it up
- Letting dogs off leash in leashed areas and letting them disturb or attack people

Well my 3 dogs don't stink, but they can be annoying sometimes. The 2 males unfortunately mark their territory in the house if you know what I mean >_> And sometimes one of them barks at me to stop whatever I'm doing & I can't figure out why.

Still, they are fun to play with, and good at calming me down when I'm upset for whatever reason. They're not perfect, but they love me & I love them.

I mean, all dogs give off an odor. Owners are most likely just used to the smell. I can walk into a house and immediately know there's a dog living there. It's kind of like a smoker not knowing his clothes and house reeks of it.

This topic is relevant to me because I used to dislike dogs and kind of like cats but then I lived with someone who has 3 dogs and 1 cat for several months and now I am more friendly with dogs.

If a stranger has a dog and it's being threatening toward me, I will still dislike that. And I dislike being jumped by a dog and being licked as well. And while I'll let the cat in my room while i'm awake I don't trust the dogs as much to not poop and pee on my floor.

But my point is that I don't mind being around dogs in general anymore. I haven't had a problem with their smell, but my sense of smell isn't that great anyway, and I'm sure I've adapted to being around them.

The other day I even walked through a large off-leash dog park [to get Pioneer and Explorer points in Ingress] and wasn't bothered by any of the dogs running around me. One or two out of a very large number started to come up to me, and I said hi and nothing more; the owner in both cases quickly got their dog to come back to them and leave me alone without my having to ask.

tl; dr: Didn't like dogs. Lived with dogs for months. Am now okay with dogs as long as they don't threaten me or ruin my stuff.

lmao this topic goes to show how despicable and insecure dog people are

Clearly your logic doesn't resemble earth logic. This topic is just more proof of what so many already knew.... There's something deeply wrong with people who don't like dogs.

I love the enthusiasm my dog has when he greets me coming home. Warms my heart.

It just wants food lol

They want food, sure, but dogs are also inherently social animals. They want to be with their pack.

They just want to get food and be taken out back to have a shit. That's it. That's the extent of a dog's complexity and why it "loves" you.

LMFAO now it all makes sense. He had a dog as a kid and try as he might, the dog just hated him.
