WW2 was caused by economic despair after the world decided they'd punish Germany for WW1 rather than helping them back on track.

Myth. Germany stopped making reparations repayments after 1931, by which time she'd paid only around 21.5 billion marks -- or less than half the cost that destruction during the war had inflicted on France. In the same period, Germany received 27 billion gold marks in net capital inflows, mainly from private investors, after the initial loan of $800 million under the Dawes Plan of 1924 opened the floodgates to foreign credit.

Under Dawes, Germany's reparations payments were reduced to 1 billion marks for the first year, rising over four years to 2.5 billion marks per year. By the late 1920s, this was equivalent to roughly 7% of Germany's total national income. The hardest year for Germany was 1921, when she paid 8.3% of her total national income for that year. And the rate of interest Germany was forced to pay on reparations -- 2.5% at first, 5% later on -- was actually smaller than the 8.5% that France and Belgium were expected to pay on their debts to the US to finance the costs of their postwar reconstruction.

In fact it could be argued that Germany actually paid between only 8 billion and 13 billion marks, or 4-7% of total national income, over the lifetime of reparations because much of Germany's reparations liability (and economic growth) after 1924 was financed by US loans -- and Germany defaulted on her US loans in the early 1930s, owing Uncle Sam the equivalent of roughly 8.4 billion marks in 1932.
