Not like you're required by law to herald it as the GOAT, but the "it's extremely overrated/terrible and no one would like it if it wasn't called Zelda" crowd is pretty ridiculous. There's a lot in BotW that either hasn't been done before or hasn't been done as well, and it gets plenty of props from plenty of places that aren't exactly known to just slurp Nintendo. I think Mario Odyssey and Nier Automata are great but I think it's pretty obvious why BOTW won the award over them. Zelda didn't really reiterate on top of previous Zelda games or open world games. It went back to the core basics of an open world game and drew design inspirations all the way back to the original Zelda and focused on exploring and experimenting within a sandbox. The closest game is probably Far Cry 2 with all of the non-scripted fire effects.
