What is average?

I mean, 5 is in the middle, but I've always viewed that as below average and anything below it as garbage. 6 for me seems rightly "average", although sometimes it creeps up to 7.

5 is indifferent, no feelings one way or another.
6 is just above, 7 starts getting good.

While I get that 5 would, by definition, be more logically average and I'm not sure why we don't view things that way, the grade system has definitely ingrained itself in our culture.

9-10 = amazing
8-9 = very good
7-8 = solid
6-7 = below average
anything below = varying degrees of bad/terrible

Just being real, the vast majority of folks who saw a movie they thought was pretty decent but not super remarkable would give it a 7, not a 5, going off the logic that it deserves a C.

4 - bad but could have been decent
5 - 6 - average
7 - above average
8 - very good
9 - amazing

this looks really funny to me since it's implying "solid" and "average" are the same

the average anything is not particularly good

10 = Lit af
9 = Pretty good
8 = Some areas need work but good
7 = Maybe worth your time if you care
6 and below = Don't bother

I mean to me 5 is average but the one above is how people tend to view things for whatever reason

anyway I guess my ranking descriptions are roughly like this:

10 - Personal favourites, will compare other similar stuff to them for peorbably the rest of my life
9 - Wowed me in one way or another, would recommend to anyone
8 - Good but without quite as much wow factor
7 - Solid
6 - Starting to get a bit lukewarm but still positive
5 - Stuff that doesn't really stand out, or that reached far but failed
4 - Not great but still has some value, probably the lowest number I'd recommend from (and only if it seems like it really fit their taste)
3 - Made me mad because of how bad it was
2 - Not enjoyable at all, would actively tell other people to avoid
1 - Failed completely and utterly at being even remotely worthwhile

10 - Perfect, or near enough that any faults are practically unnoticeable.
9 - Great, with only minor things holding it back from a 10
8 - Really good, with perhaps one significant thing holding it back
7 - Good, with either some persistent minor issues or multiple significant-but-isolated ones
6 - Alright, definitely has problems but there's still more quality than issues here
5 - Average, not good enough to be worth it but not so bad that you'll be filled with regret
4 - Weak, more problems than praises but they aren't atrocious - there's some value here
3 - Bad, there's still some hope but a lot of issues which outweigh them.
2 - Awful, multiple significant issues obscure any quality here
1 - Atrocious, if there's anything of value here then it isn't worth finding it
0 - Abysmal, there is definitely nothing of value here

That's how I break it down.

5.5 is average unless your scale included 0. If it had 0, then 5 would be smack in the middle.

The reason 7 feels like a rating for an average game is that we already have filtered out the shovelware crap that lands on the lower half of the scale. Sites like IGN don't review games like Wreck-it Ralph for Nintendo DS, because we already know it's like a 2/10. For the most part, the games that are reviewed in games are generally at least 5/10.

depends on what's being measured. Just because you're measuring something on a scale of 1 to 10 doesn't mean it's evenly distributed.
