It's like Rock Paper Scissors, but instead of three choices, you have 500+. The actual work to get into Pokemon competitively is such a chore that people just hack to create the pokemon, and it's acceptable by most of the community. Last but not least, the luck factor is extremely high because of unpredictable factors such as critical hits, accuracy, and status conditions.

Maybe I'm just a casual who just likes to catch pokemon, idk.

it's actually pretty brutal. if you make one mistake and your opponent gets a setup sweeper ready, you're fucked

Plus, VGC rules make it so that you can't use any Pokemon you meticulously created in the last generation(s) because they require that the Pokemon have some arbitrary icon that they can only get if they were obtained in the current generation, at least at the start of that gen's VGC.

competitive only pays attention to the very creme de la creme of pokes and in that sense they know some compositions are really good but have a weakness to some that are not good but are especially good agaisnt the very top dog, while some are less overall strong but also not as weak against some common counters, in that sense competitive is certainly like RPS.

That said, the hack thingie is very true and I dabbled in it myselfbecause fuck breeding pokemon like a slave, only did it once and aint nobody got time for that.

That's Smogon, which isn't official. Pokemon's official competitive format is VGC.
