How would you feel about this roster in a fighting game featuring Dynasty Warriors characters?

Starting roster:
1) Zhao Yun
2) Guan Yu
3) Zhang Fei
4) Guan Yinping
5) Xiahou Dun
6) Yue Jin
7) Dian Wei
8) Xiahou Yuan
9) Zhou Yu
10) Xu Sheng
11) Lu Xun
12) Sun Shangxiang

Unlockable:

13) Ma Chao
14) Wei Yan
15) Zhuge Liang
16) Liu Bei
17) Zhang Liao
18) Zhang He
19) Cao Pi
20) Cao Cao
21) Gan Ning
22) Lu Meng
23) Taishi Ci
24) Sun Quan

25) Diaochan

Lu Bu as unplayable boss

DLC:
1) Huang Zhong
2) Xu Zhu
3) Sun Ce
4) Lu Bu

5) Yueying
6) Cao Ren
7) Zhenji
8) Zhou Tai

This was pretty difficult, as you've got to balance representation of both new and old titles alike, with classic fan favorites. I saw fit to include every character from the first game as a homage. I really wanted Xu Huang, but eh. Cao Pi should probably be in before him. It also made sense to balance the female side of the roster a bit, since they're pretty popular. Finally, the newer games(post-DW6 generation) feature one character each from Wei, Shu, and Wu. The only unbalanced faction is Wei, with one more character than Wu or Shu, with the DLC.

DW1 reps: 14 (Zhao Yun, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhuge Liang, Xiahou Dun, Dian Wei, Xu Zhu, Cao Cao, Zhou Yu, Lu Xun, Taishi Ci, Sun Shang Xiang, Diaochan, Lu Bu)

DW2 reps: 8 (Ma Chao, Liu Bei, Zhang Liao, Gan Ning, Lu Meng, Sun Quan, Huang Zhong, Xiahou Yuan)

DW3 reps: 4 (Wei Yan, Zhang He, Sun Ce, Zhenji)

DW4 reps: 3 (Yueying, Cao Ren, Zhou Tai)

DW5 reps: 1 (Cao Pi)

DW7 reps: None. Unfortunately, DW7 focused primarily on late era characters and none of them seem particularly popular enough to warrant a spot over either the more popular or recent characters. Wang Yuanji would be out of place and the only one I would consider is Ding Feng, who is also relatively out of place.

DW8 reps: 2 (Yue Jin, Guan Yinping)

DW9 reps: 1 (Xu Sheng)

Comes to 33 characters overall, 5 female.

Why bother with Namco, when Koei can make a Tecmo Dynasty Warriors Bowl instead?

So, uhm, what would you have cross over the Soul Calibur side? It is not like Koei needs an outside studio just to make a fighter.

A Musou game with the Soulcalibur setting, of course.

Hell, Soulcalibur 1-3 was pretty much built for a musou game.

And if Koei wants their fighting game to be good, they probably need an outside studio. I say that with all the love in my heart.

It still might be beneficial using another series' IP and (in this case, relative) popularity.

A lot of DW fans are also fans of RotK, but not all of them.

Besides, they wouldn't have to waste time and resources coming up with designs that don't infringe on any other company's interpretation of the characters.

I would love a DW fighting game, but not from that dull, unimaginative developer.

As for the roster, what is this about the late characters not being popular enough? Relevancy over popularity, I say, get some representation from Jin in there. Also, if a character can be fought then they should be playable without having to pay extra. Planning to release characters as DLC before a game is even in development is a bad practice, no one wants an incomplete game.

Wow I haven't played RoTK in a while. Do they still make them? The last one I played was 11.

Also, wasn't DW originally a fighting game, or like they had made a fighter before?

About DW7, wasn't Xu Shu relatively popular? I though he did good in a poll, or maybe I'm just remembering the intro showing him off.

11 is the last good one. 12 and 13 took inspiration from their mobile garbage and arcade card game.

They did that. It sucked...but it do co-star Lloyd from Tales of Symphonia.

Please don't associate every single Hack 'N Slash that exists with a proper Musou title.

Thank you.

Xu Shu made it into 7E because he's inexplicably popular in Japan, for some reason.

It's odd because he's not even all that relevant.

Perhaps Jin for an expansion, but I mean.... With the current DW roster, they'd merely be fighting Ding Feng and each other.

The thing is, there isn't much post-Shu that is all that relevant. Especially in contrast to the Pre-Three Kingdoms period that featured Liu Bei and Cao Cao. And even directly after that, you mostly just have Shu's Northern campaigns and a handful of Wei/Wu stalemates. Jin/Late Wu isn't nearly as interesting as people make it out to be. It really just comes down to a lot of internal struggles with Jin, until they finally build a proper navy. Otherwise, the conflict between the two was pretty minimal.

Also, the DLC list wasn't really made in mind with it coming either before or after the game. Just whatever content isn't in the base roster.

Nonplayable bosses are a tradition that just sticks with me, but people would riot if Lu Bu wasn't playable eventually. So that feels like something of a compromise. And just because he's in the base game wouldn't mean there isn't additional work in making a playable version of him that's actually balanced.
