like wtf!?!?

This is one of the more messed up things in history imo.

Literally a doctor took an ice pick out of his kitchen at his HOUSE and hammered it into the brain of a patient through the eyes and this became a commonly accepted and encouraged practice.

That is just inconceivable to me. Truly baffling. That "doctor" should have been executed imo.

Ya there's other worse practices. We use to crack open a portion of the skull to release the demons that were possessing people.

That said Lobotomies are one of the greatest shame of the modern world IMO.

Circumcision definitely. SRS probably only because we'll invent something better in the future such as actual organ regeneration from stem cells or something.

These days lobotomies are basically considered unhelpful in all cases unless an extremely specific issue requires it such as a brain tumor or brain trauma so severe it needs to be cut out. I'll never understand why anyone ever thought cutting out chunks of brain makes people have less mental issues.

i'm confused

what exactly was this practice for

you would destroy part of the brain and it would leave people with the mental function of a young child

the reason for that was to "fix" people who were "defective". Usually mentally handicapped children or "deviant" adults. Also was used to "calm" violent asylum patients or inmates.

Also a reminder that a forced lobotomy turned one of the Kennedys from a normal if somewhat rebellious woman into a person who required constant care for the rest of her life. After the lobotomy she was ostracized by much of her family.

I don't say that with certainty, just as a possibility. Two invasive examples that have some controversy behind them. Lobotomies were controversial as well even when they were being done.

Well, I wanted to spare people the details that didn't want to hear, buuuuuuut... okay.

Basically, they would tie a cord around the body part that needed to be amputated to cut off circulation, then essentially peel off the skin and flesh until only the bone was left. They would bandage the area of the body that had to be kept, then saw through the bone until the part came off and then finish dressing the wound. And like I said, before anaesthetic. So the patient is conscious the entire time.

Dude there was nothing unreasonable about what I said. The point I was making wasn't focused on a comparison between the two. The comparison only goes so far. It's not as if I'm on some crusade here.

Less horrifying than letting an infection spread to your heart and kill you.

The lobotomy thing basically was useless.

it's a little less horrifying when you consider, like the link i gave earlier talks about, that a good surgeon was able do all of that in only about 30 seconds. so at least it was over pretty quick.

Yeah, I saw it, the one from the Victorian era. And if memory serves, the story I heard came from medieval times.
