Since romance isn't integral to his character it's a non-issue.

But isn't his boyfriend the main villain in the new movies? Wouldn't romance come up? Or is that not true (I don't really know much HP beyond book 4).

The problem wasn't so much "dumbledore is gay", but rather "oh hey I know I wrote all the books already but just so you know, dumbledore is gay - isn't he such a gay icon?"

Feels a bit like she was trying to force a social point.

That. Nobody cares he is gay. But she decided to make him gay after the books were over. Just to stay in the news. If she really wanted him gay put it in the books. I think she didn't want to lose sales while the books were ongoing.

I honestly don't think she had any concerns about sales or money at all at that point, but it wouldn't surprise me that she wanted to remain relevant and feel like a social activist.

To be fair I always thought dumbledore was gay before she "publically" annouced it.

I don't believe anyone who claims she didn't know he was gay and made it up after the fact. She always knew, she just wanted to show up homophobes by making them love a gay guy and then watching them try to make up excuses of why it's okay to hate him now.

And the anger seen in topics like this kinda demonstrates that nicely.

From a narrative position it does explain why he's so lax to go after Grindlewald when the rain of terror is first starting up. There's not just his personal weaknesses with regards to the Deathly Hallows and fear of his own self-destructive curiosity, but Grindlewald himself is an emotional weakness. And those two things allow him to let terrible things happen to people until he overcomes that weakness and decides to throw down in the most infamous wizarding duel in modern history.

It may have been tacked on, but there was great dramatic potential there.

I think I would have enjoyed a romance plot there but Rowling is pretty terrible at those so maybe we were better off without it.

I guess it's easy to make up conjecture like this after the fact.

I'd frame the whole movie around examining Dumbledore's insecurities.

Why was he willing to overlook his boyfriend's racism? Why was he never able to make up with his brother? Why did he stop hunting the Hallows after the death of his sister? If he wasn't afraid of Grindlewald, why did he wait so long to fight him? How did he beat the Elder Wand? Why didn't he run for the Minister of Magic after becoming the most popular wizard of the the 20th century, because he was a shoo-in and Fudge still doesn't trust him for it? He's got really great reasons for all of these things and they'd do a lot to make him more human and less of a saint.

What the fuck is this post? Your details are all kinds of wrong here.
She was asked by a kid if Dumbledore had ever married in a Q&A session after the books had come out. She said no, he loved Grindleward and never married after that.
It wasn't ever a thing about him being a gay icon. It wasn't even a planned thing for her to announce. It just happened.

Most people already suspected he was gay anyway given the clues in the 7th book. She just confirmed a very common fantheory that I imagine many posters were too young to be aware of.
