A dog owner is demanding accountability after a sheriffs deputy shot and killed his pet inside his home.

Its about justice for my dog, said Troy Ennis about his pit bull/hound mix named D. He was trying to play, and he got shot.

Durham County sheriffs deputies got a call on Feb. 26 regarding a domestic situation at Enniss home on the 100 block of Waltz Drive.

The sheriffs office released about two minutes of dash cam video around the time deputies arrived. In the video, you hear a deputy say, Can you put these dogs up? He goes on to say, Came right at me, slammed the door in his face.

Another deputy responds, I thought you were going to smoke him.

The first deputy says, I almost did.

The video does not show what happened inside the home. Ennis says one dog was placed in a crate while D was placed in a bedroom. Ennis says he turned and thats when D went around him toward the deputies.

I was reaching trying to grab him. And thats when, bam! And, Im like, You just shot my dog, recalled Ennis. I couldnt believe it. I was reaching for him. I wasnt touching him, but I had my hands right at his hips to pull him back. And, it was too late.

The shooting happened in front of a 5-year-old boy.

In an email, a spokeswoman for the sheriffs office said the 58-pound dog charged aggressively, and that the dog lunged at the deputys face.

Tamara Gibbs wrote, As with all grievances, the Sheriffs Office is conducting a thorough review of the events leading up to the shooting incident. That internal investigation is incomplete and ongoing at this time.

Ennis said hes been in touch with the sheriffs office since the incident. He said a captain told him hed get more information by Tuesday. When that didnt happen, Ennis contacted media outlets about the situation.

He just loved all people, all people, said Ennis. I think the dog saw him and wanted to play. The dog played with the kids, with those Nerf guns all the time trying to catch the darts.

The sheriffs office did not identify the deputy who shot the dog. Ennis said hed like to see that deputy disciplined or go through additional training.

Eventually: "The Durham County Sheriff's Office has made an internal investigation and has ruled that the deputy was in the right for blah blah blah..."

Funny how cops can kill your dog for any reason and get away with it yet in a lot of places killing a police dog is a felony.

It was once a thing.

They also used to take pride in being able to chase someone down and tackle them rather than tasing or shooting them. Now fitness doesn't seem to fit their schedule.

No cop is going to kill my pet and not have serious consequences, that is my family member they killed.

Too many cops get away with killing pets for no reason other then I felt threatened even when it is secure in a cage.

The public is steadily losing their faith in police and there is a dangerous mistrust. The more fucked up shit that keeps on happening and leading to not guilty verdicts or being thrown out are going to eventually lead to people snapping and vigilante justice growing rapidly.

I would cause no one gets to kill my pet and not have anything happen.

The police did not always kill pets, that shit is only recent, they used to get a stick and throw it, let you lock them up somewhere, or tell you to put your dog away.

This new bs of cops being able to just kill peoples pets is unfucking acceptable and people NEED to put a stop to it one way or another.

Shooting pets needs to stop, unless there legitimately is a danger.

On the other hand, shooting a fleeing criminal is fine. If they have nothing to hide, they won't flee. If they get away, they remain a danger to the community. Non-fatal shots should be preferred when possible, but if you have to kill them... no big deal.

Most times cops shoot to kill unarmed fleeing criminals not shooting to wound, that is fucked up and wrong. Yes the criminal should not flee but it does not give a cop the right to kill them if they do.

If they can reasonably apprehend the criminal, then they should not kill. If they must injure them in the process, that's fine. And if their only option is to kill, or if they accidentally kill while only intending to wound, that's fine too. Don't flee and you won't have that problem. And if you aren't doing anything wrong, you have no reason to flee - don't buy into the lies BLM and the like tell you about "if you comply you're going to get shot", they WANT you to flee so that when you DO get shot for that, they can parade you around as an example of why police are "bad".

Although I'll gladly admit that my main reason for "they should apprehend rather than kill" is because ideally, after being apprehended they should receive a REAL punishment. At the very least, several years of hard labor. Wouldn't personally object to torture either, if the offence is serious enough. (Perhaps not for minor things like a bar fight, though.)
