It's mostly exercise and/or giving yourself a distraction that helps with depression and anxiety. Going for a walk for example would achieve the same results. With anxiety even more so as it also helps get rid of the excess Adrenalin your body builds up.

As with any mental health issue it's something that needs to be controlled not cured as stuff like depression and anxiety are natural emotions. The difference being someone with a disorder has lost that ability to control these emotions so the brain needs to be retrained. It's very much a work in progress as opposed to a overnight fix.
