I work at a dollar store and have a neurosci bs. There's like nothing for me. Can't even get a clerical job at a hospital cuz 'that's for FEEEEMALESS right? Lol I know some chick who was just working at Meijers who got a job though...no college experience. Just cuz she's some hot, novel redhead she gets the job. Of course! I didn't apply for that job too, but I have applied for others and I know I won't be contacted. I'm basically ****ed. It's sad that things can't transfer or that there aren't tests or exams one can take to try their hand in another field that doesn't require as much responsibility (e.g. a medical doctor). Like, I have a triple major. And I've been posting on GameFAQs and other places for like 17 years. I'm a pretty good writer, especially when I try. What if I want to write for a magazine? They won't give a damn....not that I've tried. But seriously though...what if I wanted to write for a TV show even. Can I just propose a script or anything? Will they care? Hm...maybe I should look into this.

Demand matters. Location matters. Networking matters. I don't know who told you breaking into the job market was easy if all you've satisfied is "got a degree", but there's a lot more to it, and of course, if you're never taught these things, you're at a serious disadvantage when you get out the door.

Oh also being a proper human being might help as well. I know a guy who's still working at customer service in a supermarket despite having an engineering degree and the reason is because he's a shit-tier person who can't pass an interview in a professional setting.

After getting my BSME I had two job offers, a technician position earning 45K I turned down then some bullshit glass company position drawing rectangles in 2D software all day earning $41,600 which I accepted out of desperation (I was actually earning $17.50/hr the first three months too, and they originally offered me $15/hr which I turned down).

I'm in a much better place now but I wish somebody told me back in school that the job market is absolutely brutal.

Because the job market is bullshit and is more dependent on connections than anything. I remember searching like hell for my first job after college despite having a high GPA from a top school and an internship at a top consulting form.

Then when I finally got into a big corporation, I realize a lot of hired engineers are awful. (Fail at basic arithmetic awful). That they were hired because of connections.

Its not just grades either. Engineers sometimes go through cyclical employment. My industry is down right now. I have a PhD in chemical engineering. I had a 4.0 GPA and published 6 papers and 5 patents. I have only ever had good reviews but my company is having difficulty paying my salary due to the competitive nature of our industry. I have about 3 months to find a new job right now before my contract expires. I dont want to leave the area.

I am doing technical design and sales. I had an interview which I aced. I showed the company how I was familiar with their customer base. I showed them how I was local to the area and had no plan to just jump jobs. I showed them that I was technically familiar with their product line and could easily integrate myself into their organization I didnt get it.

If things dont change, Im gonna go back to school to get an MD. Im freaking tired of having to be panicked looking for work when I am good at what I do just because of changing market conditions. My wife is already on board to work extra hours to make our finances work.

It's the same over here in the D.C. area. Literally everyone has a degree. I met a guy that was a college professor for 4 years, the University downsized and he got let go, then ended up having to work retail because he couldn't find anything else in the area that fit his degree.

It was very sad.

Yeah, if the job market in industry is tough, the job market in academia is just fucked.

That was a lot of papers for newly minted 26 year old PhD me. Now, a few years later, its not so impressive anymore. Also, I think it is somewhat disingenuous that universities supply crappy statistics about the job market in order to get butts in the chairs. I dont want to be a part of that system. When I first graduated, I utilized the career services section at the university. Oh, you are really overqualified for everything we have here. Ever considered going into the CIA? I eventually got a job a couple of months later. I think its crazy for me to have great skills, great references, and still to need to apply fora couple of months before I get a job offer.

So you don't want to get into academia and have more income and possibly get tenure so you wouldn't have to worry about the situation you said you were worried so much about that you are considering spending 4+ years in school possibly with added debt, just because you don't like the ethics/analysis of their marketing? Sounds pretty silly to me no offense. I would just get to my job and do my work and be proud of my work not worrying about what the school is saying to other people because I know I would be putting food on the table.
