Even if she's only locked up for a couple hours, and she's gone prior to being caged. You can then start taking the pads outside to associate going outside with the "right" way to go and eventually transition off the pads entirely. Dude we're taking her out literally multiple times an hour. It isn't that we're ignoring her. We usually cut her food and water about at least an hour before she gets crated. Puppies sleep a LOT and as long as they're getting ample playtime when not crated, it's perfectly reasonable to crate her in intervals even when you're home. It's important to establish a routine and boundaries and a crate is one of the best ways to do that. Plus the crate becomes the dog's "safe space" she can go to when she doesn't want to socialize. Puppies sleep a LOT and as long as they're getting ample playtime when not crated, it's perfectly reasonable to crate her in intervals even when you're home.
