A car is a dangerous thing. When you're driving, you're in control of a big hunk of metal that weighs thousands of pounds. If you don't know what you're doing, you can easily kill someone.

Same with guns.

Guns are not toys. If someone can buy a gun without having any idea what the fuck he's doing, he can seriously hurt himself or someone else.

So why not just do the same as with cars. If you want a gun, get training and take an exam. If you pass and you can prove you know what you're doing, you can have your gun.

And if you screw up, we take the gun away.

If you're an alcoholic, we take the gun away until you prove that you've recovered.

If you're mentally unstable, we take the gun away.

Etc.

Same as the DMV does in some places.

What's wrong with that?

We should either make cars a right or take the right to guns away. Cars are certainly more useful day to day.

Then the government knows i have guns and itll be easier for them to kill us when we go to war with them.

Something like that i think is the excuse.

You only need to a driver's license to operate a car on public roadways. You don't need one to keep a car on your own private property.

Gun safety used to be a thing in schools, either as part of the PE curriculum or part of hunter safety. We dont do either one anymore and problems are escalating. Hmmm...

I dont disagree with the premise of regulating guns with safety courses, but owning a gun is a constitutional right. Owning a car isnt. So, thats going to be a hurdle to overcome. But, again, I dont disagree with the idea of having gun safety courses and being licensed to own one if the process is reasonable.

DC v Keller tried that and failed. The main reason was because the licensing procedure was so strict that is practically barred everyone from owning a gun. The regulations were so strict that the plaintiff in this case, a police officer, could not get licensing to own a firearm in his home.

While requiring training and licensing sounds good, the little details can essentially shut down the Second Amendment if the requirements are practically impossible to meet.

You still have the right to guns. But the constitution doesn't make it absolute. For example, convicted felons, etc.

It doesn't have to be that hard.

Just prove that you basic safety things like trigger discipline and stuff like that.

Basically, the same kind of difficulty as with driver licenses.

Technically you only need training/license to operate a vehicle on public roads, not own one or operate privately.

Also, drivers licenses don't require background or mental health checks.

Treating guns like cars would make them more accessible. :\

Sarcasm doesnt work well when you use logic in your statement.

Although youre trying to make it into a reductio ad absurdum, your underlying premise is correct. Theyre treated differently because there is a constitutional right to own firearms.
