So a few years ago they were like: there's three checks this month, 2 with 2 weeks pay and 1 with 1 week's pay, company is doing this to catch up on payroll or something. Apparently you get this week's pay once you quit or get terminated.

Yeah, every place that I've worked held the first week's pay until I left. Maybe they're incorporating this now and everyone just happened to get affected at once?

You get it back once you quit/laid off/fired. Some type of "fall back" plan that wasn't optional for all but one of my employers.

Idk how one weeks gonna make a huge difference but w/e.

I live in PA and have had two engineering jobs, and one as a lifeguard earlier in my life, and all of them held the first paycheck, but maybe it's just a PA thing

I don't think ive had a job where they give the first week when you leave. We just call it a week in the hole. Some will have 3 weeks on the first check, some pay out that single week on the next pay period, but never like that.
