The good guys were far too cooperative. There are characters that are close but in different ways. Renji fits the profile only his competition was with Byakuya. I agree, starts off with a super rivalry, letting his arrogance and attempts to be better than Ichigo cause unfortunate events. Even after they set the rivalry aside, and work together, they tend to not really get along very well.
