No; you don't get to pick. I've just also said I'd rather not be, why would I say that? I've never met anyone nor heard anything about Greeks not being white until just now. They are linguistically on the Centum side of the Centum-Satem isogloss, they are the origin of most western philosophical thought, they were an important rampart of Christendom; and more recently the legacy of the Roman Empire. I however will say; that in America, it would do me much more an advantage not to be considered white. So I would gladly reject it. I don't care. But if I am white, then so is Cleopatra, and I don't think many reasonable people would look at me and say "He's not white." even with the knowledge of my ancestry.

In the strictest definition of who is or is not white, I have never seen it exclude Greece. But that's great, I no longer am cursed with the immediate dismissal that comes with being white in any discussion of race or identity politics.

You can't use the nebulous term "sentiment" and say clearly. Moreover why then is Greece included in the EU and not Turkey (Altaic, turkic non-europeans invaders with foreign ideologies and no shared history)? Whiteness isn't really a racial thing, plenty of groups who aren't white are members of the problematic racial category "caucasoid" but race is an archaic and silly thing anyway, and I don't like the term white or caucasoid; and I don't like racial categories as a general rule. However; if we are able to look objectively; white usually /better than roughly/ corresponds with the traditional boundaries of Christendom but the term Christendom is also problematic with growing secularism in those places. So theres either nothing that unites western civilization or we can be objective and TRUTHFUL and say that there is a clear distinction between whom we categorize as white and others, and that boundary would be drawn past Greece not before it.

I hate racial arguments because of the semantics I have to trudge through. We still use the terms White, black etc. so we have to define them and the definitions should make sense as that is the purpose of any nomenclature.

Herodotus writes that Alexander I of Macedon wanted to compete in the Olympics but was barred from entering due to being a barbarian. It was until the dubious cliam that Alexander I was an Argive rather than a Macedon that he was allowed to compete.

for when Alexander chose to contend and entered the lists for that purpose, the Greeks who were to run against him wanted to bar him from the race, saying that the contest should be for Greeks and not for foreigners. Alexander, however, proving himself to be an Argive, was judged to be a Greek. Hdt. 5.22.2

Plutarch also says this

I by no means assent to Demaratus of Corinth, who said that those Greeks lost a great satisfaction that did not live to see Alexander sit on the throne of Darius. That sight should rather have drawn tears from them, when they considered that they have left the glory to Alexander and the Macedonians, whilst they spent all their own great commanders in playing them against each other in the fields of Leuctra, Coronea, Corinth, and Arcadia.

This looks so much less nuanced than the film, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. Another film about the racial tensions between white POW and their Japanese captors. It's still pretty problematic, doing that thing where humanist liberalism magically overcomes racism which has been culturally engrained across centuries by good-hearted Civil disobedience. But it's from the seventies, and we will still be doing that shit in the nineties. It's also got Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Bowie. So you get hot sexual ambiguity on screen alongside culture, a awesome soundtrack (Sakamoto is the composer and an actor), and a more nuanced juxtaposition of traditional Eastern and Western ethics written by people who identify with them.

Okay that was a fun read; and it was nice and I do like what you cited. Very interesting. It is however semantical; Classical Macedonians are as greek as Achaeans or Atticans;
The Argead/Temenid dynasty were Ionians and back then if we are using the term Greek at all, we know they were all in conflict with each other and made loose defensive pacts here or there that shifted endlessly... They were linguistically and culturally hellenic before the hellenistic period began which is what makes one generally part of Classical Greek civilization...
