He orchestrated events to lead people to the island and then created situations that got them killed. And Smokey was an asshole, but largely because of what Jacob and their mother did to them. He just wanted to leave the island, and they turned him into a literal monster. TNG and DS9 didn't have clip show finales, pats on the back, or revised characters. If anything, Voyager had the fucked up characters since it suddenly and without warning puts Chakotay and Seven in a relationship which had never been hinted at before. I will say it kept Janeway true to form though. She unilaterally decided to go back in time to change things because she personally wasn't happy about things.
