There was a school shooting in the UK in 1996. Shortly afterwards, the UK outright banned handgun ownership.

Number of school shootings in the UK since 1996: 0

The solution is there if you want it (you don't)

Here's the cause of school shootings.

Ask yourself, do you know a crazy person about to snap when you see one?

Do you think your teachers do? Your parents? The school security guards?

so if nobody knows what "the voices tell me to kill them all" looks like from an outside perspective or from a distance, how can anyone see it coming?

That's why people always say that they didn't see it coming when say, a suicide happens. Nobody actually knows how to spot someone who's suicidally depressed and ready to end it unless they blatantly cry for help

It's still not mental illness. They only do evil because they're taught it's good, virtuous, holy. And there's plenty of neurotypical people who will kill and have killed. Consider how much we glorify violence, and how we justify police shootings all the time, and also how people love that "the liberals will have to pry my guns from my cold, dead hands" line. They're perfectly fine mentally. They just can excuse terrible things.

Please don't refer to mentally ill people as damaged as you just implied.

I am damaged though. Otherwise, I would be neurotypical. Everyone should be treated equally human, but there is still a quantifiable difference there and we can't just pretend it doesn't exist. That only serves to hurt the people we want to help.

Also, there is a difference between being complacent to killings or killing under some sort of durress, and literally being devoid of empathy and regard for human life and killing people. Doing the latter absolutely makes you mentally ill. Obviously, not all or even most mentally ill people are ill in that way, but the ones that are like that would be the type to kill in cold blood. There's different things at play in those different situations.

What's weird is that the majority of these mass shootings are white males. White males, on average, have more opportunity to get help for mental health issues while minorities, like African Americans and Hispanics etc., have a huge stigma (moreso than white Americans) within their cultures of even speaking about mental health yet there's no influx of mass shootings by those ethnicities.

Not saying all people with the opportunity to receive care for their illness necessarily will, but people like the Vegas shooter and this Florida shooter definitely had the means to obtain help.

No influx of MASS shootings in those ethnicities, but African Americans of that age group shoot each other at such a high rate that homicide is the leading cause of death for high school aged African American males.

Yeah this is about mass shootings. Not gang related violence, which is what I'm assuming you're talking about.

Nope.

Yep; it is. Sorry youre just unwilling to accept that the blame lies with something other than firearms. Pls go.

I'm not blaming fire arms at all. But to suggest each and everyone of these shootings are mental illness makes no sense. You mean to tell me these teens boys on pills got access to advanced firearms and went shooting up a school?

And we aren't talking about stan

So they all happen to be on psychotropic drugs, and that's a red herring to you?

I would say both are tragedies. The difference is that gang violence has nothing to do with mental health. No one is considering mental health when speaking about gang violence. There's completely different motives involved too. So you're comparing two completely separate things for the sake of your narrative.

To do a school shooting you need to be the joker level insane

To be mentally ill, you only need to have panic attacks or anxiety, essentially, nothing crazy (anxiety can be considered a mental illness and medication prescribed for it)

you get types who stay to themselves and are passive (like myself).
but some people get kinda trapped/seppressed and explode.

antidepressants may help, but they do shut down somethings (some people feel strange with them, zombified, or less empathy).

(i actually dont believe antidepressants cause mass shootings, just they may increase likely for some tiny minority who may have been trigger happy before that).

I'd recommend everyone read through this study:
http://www.scielo.sa.cr/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S1409-47032015000100022

Some key points are:
-Over the last three decades, 67% of the total of school shootings have occurred in the United States. (this study was done in 2015)
-In the 1920-2000 period, 49 percent of school shootings took place in the 2000s.
-School shooters were regular students who did not exteriorize misbehavior nor obtained low grades.
-School shooters' parents generally were 'gun collectors' and some of them went hunting with their sons since they were children.

This study's conclusion is that school shooters shoot up schools in order to prove their masculinity

Most mental illnesses are not characterized by violence towards others, only themselves.

Do you know why white nationalist or other radical hate groups flourish? It isn't because they're mentally ill. It's because they get answers for why their lives are bad, and they accept those answers as true because reality and facts don't make them feel satisfied.

Ease of access to guns is a big factor

But mostly it's a matter of who has access to guns

Oregon just passed legislation that will prevent any domestic abuser from owning a gun, though I have yet to see how it defines domestic abuse with regard to convictions and charges.

You really think that killing unto its own end is somehow not a motive? Christ, do you even take a moment to think about that given the murder filled history of ours? People who snap still are statistically likely to just grab whatever they can get ahold of (scissors, knives, etc) and start attacking. They wouldn't spend weeks or months planning out an attack and carry it through. That's not how snapping works.
