As in, the IT department have the ability to view the emails sent and received of company staff

Should a company's IT department have full access to all staff emails? As in the corporate email server and all corporate email addresses. Obviously not, say, a private email account someone happened to log into at work.

No. You give up access to a lot of confidential information by doing that.

lets up the ante a little. a staff member accesses their personal emails using the company network. do you change your answer in this scenario?

That doesnt even make a single bit of sense that Im a reason. I work in a corporate environment and our IT guys have zero access to our email inboxes. Its not required nor needed. There is far to much confidential information shared through our email for them to just be able to peruse it at will. Enough people internally have the necessary access for the situation youre describing to make it unnecessary.

Nothing you do on the company network should have any expectation of privacy. I don't even log into my bank account from work. Obviously it shouldn't be a totally open system where random IT guys can jump into your email whenever, but they should be able to under the right circumstances.

If your company uses a private email server then lol yeah they do dude. The low level help desk guys might not but the ones that manage the Exchange server do.

There are actual situations where I've had to sit down with a manager and go through an employees email to find where that employee is sending out customer's private financial info.

If it happens on the company's servers then it's the company's property.

Yes, for the same reason any company like that will monitor your Internet usage.
