Lol. What admissions committee would even fall for this? I feel like if I were on an admissions committee for a college and I saw the kid on a paper with their parents, I would automatically discount it.

I mean, to be fair, it's not outside of the realm of other authorship misconduct, especially in biomedical sciences, but just kinda really funny on top of it.

The institutions they represent should be reprimanded. And the funding they get should be reevaluated.

It doesnt surprise me. The pressure to excel academically in South Korea and to get into a top school is almost overwhelming.

Oh, I don't disagree. Just saying that the only reason these cases are particularly salient is that they are ridiculous. If an undergrad is given authorship in biomedical sciences, it's very likely that they didn't meet NIH authorship guidelines.

Ah, that. It's slightly old news over here.

As a South Korean whose father was a professor in neurobiology for decades, this is hilarious. He's half-dumbfounded and half-furious that something like this could happen.

What kind of dumbasses thought this would be accepted? How could they think this would work? A middle school or high school student authoring a scientific paper? Co-authoring with a parent no less? Seriously? Kids have no place in a paper except a passing mention in the acknowledgements section.

Fire those researchers' asses and put a black mark on each of their names so their careers are finished. People with that kind of stupidity don't deserve to work in science anyway.

I'm pretty sure there's an actual written out version of this somewhere, but I can't seem to find it. The graphic is generally accurate though. If you are a trained cog in a wheel, no authorship, essentially.

That looks reasonable yeah. I don't think everyone at our uni follows that, by far. Some professors are supervisors in name only but will demand co-authorship. Maybe not demand explicitly but e.g., PhD students easily find themselves somewhat pressured to include them.

fun fact: my old adviser took my master's thesis, slapped his name in first author position, trimmed down to appropriate size, and submitted to a conference

if it were a journal i'd have been angry

I'm pretty sure that happens here too. Most of us ask for permission and put the student as co-author at least, though.

Full is an exaggeration at best. Really, the issue is low funding creating an extremely cut throat environment. It's extremely hard to be in academia, and people have worked their entire lives to be there, so it can push people beyond their threshold.

People do shady stuff everywhere, yeah. Academia is one of the better places in terms of trying to fix its own issues, IMO.
