Since this was Japanese relations, my instructor likes the idea of having speakers come into class to lecture on Fridays if he has someone for us to see. Today, he had a navy commander come to speak to us. He claimed that he met Norikawa (the commander) one day taking his son to school and it was kind of a destiny thing. He found out Norikawa worked on a Japanese carrier ship for years and invited him to speak to us.

What makes it more interesting is that I guess all Japanese navy commanders to this day, have not ever gained a degree overseas/outside of Japan. This guy is supposed to be possibly the very first one who will be accomplishing it.

With his experience and thick Japanese accent, I wanted to properly thank him in Japanese since I have been learning. I believe what I said was:

".,.!"

Later after leaving class, I realized I didn't say "Mashita" instead, but he nodded, smiled, and even thanked me back in Japanese.

I dunno. Being in the US and not meeting too many Japanese people.... especially of this man's caliber and ranking, I thought this exchange was really awesome.
