I assume he wanted to escape and then kill more people later.

Cowards way out huh. Nah I don't think so, that's a serious decision to make and he's got to weigh his options. Either kill himself, or rot in prison for the rest of his days. He got out of the school though and was caught a little further away. His maroon shirt gave him away, I think given a little more time to get home he would of offed himself.
