Light as Kira rules Japan but he faces the perpetual challenge of other World Countries trying to rid of Japan's tyrannical rule. There are no nukes and indiscrete bombing would cause WWIII due to tense international relationships.

Does someone in the world have asspull level powers of deduction or is it literally Light with a magic book vs typical law enforcement? Pretty sure the guy with magical killing powers and a genius IQ wins that despite his overconfidence and bad life choices

I thought he was a public figure because you said he "ruled Japan". If he's just an influence like in the manga then he already "ruled" most of the world anyway.

Suddenly the name Light Yagami becomes really popular and is a leading political candidate pick in every country despite the fact that he wears a mask and only talks through a voice changer, in every country.

He does but more like in the manga where he's this mysterious figure with only a few knowing his secret identity.

That's kind of paradoxal. If it's like the manga he already pretty much ruled the world. If he's a public figure then that can be easily traced to kill him with assassins.

We'll compromise and say they know his name but he underwent plastic surgery, changing his appearance and uses a few trusted individuals as spokesman.

Yeah, Light solos then. It'd take years for standard intelligence agencies to even figure out there was an actual problem. By then Light would have refined his technique enough to be basically untraceable.

I want to point out that even at the END of Death Note the magic book had only been used to kill around 600,000 people over the course of almost a decade. Roughly 60,000 people a year, which seems like alot until you realize the US ALONE has a prison population of over 2,000,000 with an additional 4,000,000 on probation or parole. Spread those 60,000 people out across all the countries in the world and it's virtually untraceable. The fact that the intelligence community had already started investigating only a few weeks into Light killing people is frankly bullshit to start with, even with L being involved. Without someone as unrealistically talented as L they wouldn't stand a chance.
