How do I have to empty my savings one year and then make no changes and get such a huge refund the next? Taxes make no sense.

Oh shit thank you for reminding me. Im having my car serviced right now and was pissed it cost more than expected but I totally forgot I should have a refund on the way when I file. :D.

You're actually better off having a balance due because your refund doesn't include interest on money that should have been yours from the start.

well you are giving them a free loan when you get a refund back. so that does suck.

but some credits you can only get when filing, you cant state them on your wage statement.

I usually come close to an even break.

Conventional wisdom says this. But it's a holdover from a time when you could get more than a quarter of a percent on a savings account.

But even if your reasoning is antiquated, it's still bad to get a refund as it means you've been living on less than you needed to.

I'm gonna redo my W-4 I guess but I dunno, with the way it's gone the last few years even if I leave it I might still owe $10k next year.

I get 1% interest on my savings account but you need to have at least $10,000 to get it
